The Anatomy Of A Northerner
The Anatomy Of A Northerner is one of my best-selling prints which makes me extremely happy, because it is inspired by visuals that I love, and it took me an absolute age to compile all the text! I love any vintage depictions of skulls and skeletons, and have always been intrigued by historical anatomy, nature and biology diagrams. But how to take these visual inspirations and create something Northern?
The idea for this art print was simple enough; a vintage diagram of a human skeleton labelling various body parts, but with all the labels being Northern slang, colloquialisms or turns-of-phrase. The hardest part of this was finding, collecting and collating enough words or phrases that would work, which took several weeks and many scraps of paper and odd corners of sketchbook pages!
Once all the body part labels were compiled, it was poring over lots of different skull and skeleton diagrams and referencing lots of genuine anatomical diagrams to develop a visual style that felt right, but worked as a print that you could frame and put on the wall
The final print has a dark, antique and macabre aesthetic, uniquely paired with a sharp sense of humour and a distinct Northern feel. This design always draws lots of attention and earns a lot of laughs at any stalls, markets or pop-ups, and is a perfect addition to any slightly gothic themed gallery wall
