Weight Bearer - Watch The Collapse

The Problem: Develop an identity followed by album artwork for concept-driven Metallic Hardcore band Weigh Bearer. The logo needed to display the full name, include a small graphic element, and have some alternate lockups. The album explores the consequences of poor mental health, spilling over into society with hatred and violence that can creep into relationships and family, and needed appropriate visual imagery.

The Solution: Being a band that write music with dark, sprawling and interwoven concepts, we established early on that we wanted to develop a layered and textured feel to all of Weight Bearer’s artwork. Amongst all the dark lyrical content however, there remains optimism and hope, a need to find inner strength and resilience. With this in mind we developed a diamond style icon for the logo along with some custom bold typography; rough around the edges, but standing strong and tall all the same.

For the album artwork, we wanted to create a sense of recognition without any of the artwork being overly explicit or descriptive. At the centre of the songs is this struggle of internal thoughts and mental health, uncontrollably spilling out into the world. We went with a solitary, faceless figure with a collaged, layered ‘smoke’ billowing from their head to portray this idea. The contents of the smoke both partially recognisable but difficult to identify at the same time, much like observing other people’s struggle with mental health from an outside perspective.
