Curious Minds Impact Report 2020

The Problem: Curious Minds wanted to reflect on their activities, provision and effectiveness during 2020, especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. They wanted to pull a range of case studies, testimony and data together into an impact report. The report would not only be used as a measure of their successes internally, but the data points collected would act as important evidence in securing future funding. Curious Minds needed a concise and visually stimulating Impact Report, one that communicated the organisations value to internal and external parties, while still presenting the data in a fresh, exciting and engaging manner.

The Solution: Our main aim for this project was for it to be engaging, not merely ‘just another report’. Having worked with Curious Minds earlier in the year to create the identity for their Bubble Up Summer programme, I was keen to expand upon the visual language I had begun to develop during that project. This enabled the use of bold, rounded and friendly typography for the headings, pull quotes and certain data points. We also used orange as our principal colour for it’s ability to grab attention and visually stimulate. Case studies were set against a light orange background, highlighting them as key points of interest. Simple visual cues were used to help he reader engage fully with the report; images and coloured sections would often start at the very edge of one page, guiding the reader through to the next double page. Key figures were highlighted with colour. We developed circular graphs/infographics as this made data centralised and a point of focus, rather than a sprawling bar graph that lacked a sense of engagement.

The booklet was designed with print in mind, but due to Covid-19 at the time of the release, the impact report was designed with digital consumption in mind. This gave us the opportunity to add links to external websites and video content. Certain sections of the report had button style graphics that would take the reader to external content, keeping the report itself concise, but increasing the value of the report by making it a live, interactive document.
